Collaboration in the Faculty Hiring Process听

The University Research Animal Resources (URAR) team can be an important resource to units and finalist candidates during the faculty hiring process, and URAR also benefits from learning of new faculty research animal needs as early as possible.听

What steps should I take in the faculty hiring process?听听

If the faculty members you are recruiting will be conducting animal research, please contact URAR before the finalist interviews. Collaborative discussions with Office of Research regarding animal housing equipment or space needs for new faculty that require funding are critical to a successful recruitment.听听

How can University Research Animal Resources (URAR) help my recruiting?听听

During the interview process, for all finalists brought to campus, we can provide information regarding听URAR expertise, infrastructure, equipment, capacity, locations, and costs. URAR has found the following types of assistance to听benefit finalist candidates the most:听

听

• Relevant vivarium tours, tailored to their model species & type of research
• Review of available equipment (caging, containment vs conventional, anesthesia equipment, surgical space, behavior, imaging, etc.)
• Web links or pdfs of per diem rates and service fees
• Meeting with key URAR leadership, such as the director (M.A. McCrackin, ma.mccrackin@uga.edu) and Operations Manager (Lisa Wilson, lisakay@uga.edu).

What types of support does URAR offer?听听

University Research Animal Resources (URAR) supports the research enterprise with expertise in 听

听

• Biomedical and Other Research Animal Housing,
• Veterinary Care of laboratory animals, and听
• Collaborative research.

What should we do once a finalist is selected for hire?听听

Please contact URAR as soon as possible once an offer has been made. We will discuss:听听

• Above assistance info if not accessed during on campus interview and
• Zoom meeting or in person participation by URAR during second听interview to discuss:听

1. 1. Animal housing needs

1. 1. 1. Species, # animals or cages to be transferred, health status
      2. Support equipment or infrastructure PI needs to be near so we can help identify/introduce potential collaborators, particularly for PI-owned instruments housed inside vivaria
      3. Determine which vivaria are possibilities for housing and what additional equipment may need to be purchased
